About Us Supermud Pottery Studio was started 30 years ago as a working studio and gallery, and has been in its current sunny second story location on the Upper West Side since 1997. We offer classes in handbuilding, wheel throwing and glazing to adults and children of all skill levels. Classes consist of no more than 9 students to allow for individual attention from our highly skilled teaching staff. The relaxed ambiance of the studio encourages sharing of ideas and fosters creativity. In addition to classes, we offer workshops for parent/child and adults as well as children’s parties. Supermud’s gallery showcases pottery created by nationally recognized local ceramic artists, our teaching staff and students. Works include utilitarian and decorative items such as mugs, platters, bowls, teapots, pitchers, vases, and sculptures. You are welcome you to drop-in to see the studio and the gallery exhibit during our studio hours. What’s New SPRING SEMESTER STARTS SOON! Our Winter 2009 semester endedApril 6th, and Supermud was closedclosed for Spring/Passover/Easter from Tuesday April 7th through Sunday April 12th. The Spring 2009 semester will run from Monday, April 13th through Monday, June 29th (closed on Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day). This will be an 11-week semester and the total cost for an adult class will be $418. GUEST POTTERS TEACHING ADVANCED TECHNIQUES! This semester, the Saturday morning class will be an advanced class, with guest potters teaching mini-sessions focused on decorative techniques. Our first Saturday morning session will be April 18th, April 25th, and May 2 and will be taught by Susannah Tisue, a Resident Artist at Greenwich House Pottery (see images of her work at susannahtisue.blogspot.com). Louise Harter has agreed to teach a session on slip decorating, with the dates TBA (see images of her work at www.earthandfiregallery.com/Chain_Louise.html). There are two ways to take the Saturday morning class. (1) You can sign up for Saturday mornings as your regular class. The cost will be the same ($418 for 11 weeks) and the open studio time will be the same. (2) Alternatively, you can sign up for a different regular class (Weds or Thurs mornings, for example) and take the Saturday morning classes in addition. For example, Susannah Tisue's 3-week session on transfer techniques will cost $75 if you are already signed up for a regular class. If anyone has any questions, feel free to send us an email. 3-Week Wheel Throwing Class for beginners will be held on Friday evenings during the Spring session. It is a shorter class for those people who have always wanted to try the potter's wheel but did not want to make a 6-11 week commitment until they were sure they like it. People who have never worked in clay are welcome. You will learn the basics of wheel throwing and how to trim and glaze your pieces. The class fee includes instruction, clay, glazing, and firing. Tools will be provided. (This class does not include open studio hours. |
